Typography Assignment – Organic Types

October 31, 2010

As in Graphics our assignment was to create a new font, I decided to continue with my theme of organic materials. We had only one other stipulation; we had to use a scanner to create the font – be it scanning in an object and manipulating it on photoshop, or making the letter on the scanner top itself and “cleaning it up” in photoshop. I chose the latter as i wanted a more natural look and i didn’t want to use photoshop too much in terms of creation. I used many materials such as;

  • sand
  • shells
  • dirt
  • mushrooms
  • dead petals
  • feathers
  • stones
  • slate
  • moss
  • snakeskin
  • twigs ect

I tried to use colours of a similar palette so they would flow better, as thier were so many different objects to make use of. I wanted to use lots of variety of natural elements as nature itself is so diverse. So here it is!…

    I LOVE these letters you created!! Is there any chance you would consider sending them to me? I’d love to make them into an Alphabet Wall Cling for my sons preschool! I’d be willing to pay a small fee, if that helps 🙂

      Hi Anna!

      Thank you for your interest, I’m really pleased that you like them! This work was made about five years ago, so I may have to hunt around a little for the file, but I would be more than happy to send you a PDF or similar format when I find it. My email is if you would like any more information or have any questions. 🙂

    I absolutely agree with Anna! I’m in a reception class and had exactly the same thought. If you found the original would I also be able to have a copy? As Anna I would also be willing to make a contribution! GD
